How Much Does Long-Term Care Cost in Contra Costa County?
Costs depend on location, room type, care needs, and the services included in the provider’s base rate. Published estimates also use different methods, so families should treat them as budgeting benchmarks rather than guaranteed prices.
| Care type and location | Recent published estimate |
| Assisted living in Walnut Creek | Approximately $7,650 per month |
| Assisted living in Brentwood | Approximately $7,650 per month |
| Assisted living in Antioch | Approximately $3,750 per month |
| Non-medical in-home care in California | Approximately $40 per hour |
| Assisted living in California | Approximately $7,000 per month |
| Skilled nursing in California, semi-private room | Approximately $12,167 per month |
| Skilled nursing in California, private room | Approximately $15,178 per month |

Consistent pricing is not published for every Contra Costa County community. The table combines available city-level estimates with CareScout’s 2025 California medians to give families in San Ramon, Rossmoor, Martinez, Moraga, and surrounding communities a reasonable starting point for budgeting.
Memory care, medication management, mobility assistance, and private rooms may add substantially to the monthly bill. Families may also need to budget for transportation, home modifications, medical equipment, and time away from work for caregiving.
What Can Happen If Your Family Does Not Plan Ahead?
A hospitalization or sudden decline can force a family to select care before anyone has reviewed the financial consequences. Relatives may disagree about who should provide assistance, how bills will be paid, or whether an older adult can remain at home.
If powers of attorney and health care directives are not completed before capacity is lost, the family may need to seek a court-appointed conservator. Care expenses may also reduce savings while an incomplete or delayed Medi-Cal application leaves benefits unavailable.
How Can Elder Care Planning Protect Your Options?
Once we understand your circumstances, we can identify legal strategies that may help you prepare for care while preserving available resources. A long-term care plan may include:
- Reviewing whether assets are countable for Medi-Cal purposes
- Evaluating trusts, ownership arrangements, and beneficiary designations
- Preparing powers of attorney and advance health care directives
- Planning for a spouse who will remain at home
- Creating a special needs trust for a disabled spouse or adult child
- Coordinating anticipated health, housing, and financial needs through a life care plan
Transfers and gifts should be evaluated carefully. California reinstated asset limits in 2026, and transfers made on or after January 1, 2026, may affect eligibility for Medi-Cal nursing-home coverage under the state’s 30-month look-back rules.
How Does a Nursing Background Shape the Plan?
Julie Fiedler’s nursing experience provides a close understanding of how medical changes affect older adults and their caregivers. That perspective helps us look beyond the paperwork.
We consider how the plan may operate if someone develops dementia, can no longer live independently, or requires more care than a spouse can provide. We can then prepare legal documents and benefit strategies with those possibilities in mind.

FAQs
What is a life care plan?
A life care plan coordinates anticipated health, caregiving, housing, legal, and financial needs. It can identify who will make decisions, where care may be provided, and how the family expects to pay for support.
Can Medi-Cal planning help after a parent enters a nursing home?
It may. Eligibility rules, spousal protections, countable assets, prior transfers, and application timing can still be reviewed after admission. Prompt legal advice may preserve options that could be lost through uninformed spending or transfers.
Does Medicare pay for assisted living?
Generally, no. Medicare may cover qualifying medical treatment or limited skilled care, but it does not ordinarily pay for assisted-living housing or ongoing help with daily activities.
